To maintain privacy, this blog contains updates primarily on those family members who are no longer with us. This blog is currently concentrated on Caite's maternal family.

March 18, 2009 - A Conclusion

Now that I have completed the majority of the historical research for my maternal family, I am going to cease updating this blog, at least on a regular basis (and until I begin another branch of my family). Although there are still unanswered questions, I feel that at this point they will only be resolved with many more years of research and/or accidental discoveries.

I am still in search of photographs however, and would love to hear from anyone who has photos of Laura Ann Barlow Daughtry, Hampton Lamar Daughtry Sr., Joseph Griffin Daughtry, Richard LeRoy Daughtry, Mary Clifford Jossey Daughtry, or any of the descendants of the above.

Other photographs I'm in search of include Emma Catherine Bradley Reichert, and her parents, Charles and Carrie Virginia Bradley; Daniel Stone and Cynthia Shumate, Mason Shumate, Francis Irwin Stone, and Emma Antoinette Kirkpatrick Stone.

March 11, 2009 - 199!

March 11, 2009 marks the 199th birthday of Wiley DeLansing Daughtry, the grandfather of Cliff Daughtry.

February 9, 2009 - American Beauty

I have just listened to more of the tapes recorded in 1984 by Margaret Emily Daughtry (1906-1991), granddaughter of Wiley DeLansing Daughtry, daughter of Hampton Lamar Daughtry. She is quoted as saying of her first cousin, Cliff Daughtry that she was a "beauty", and that she had "the most perfect skin I've ever seen on anybody in my life!"

Click here to listen to a clip of Emily Daughtry talking about a visit to her cousins Cliff and Bess. She is referred to as Clifford.

February 7, 2009 - Bradleys in Baltimore

Have just found another Bradley cousin - this would be on Grandpa Kurt's mother's side of the family (he is my third cousin, once removed). He has passed on a ton of great new data on the Bradley family, including the fact that Charles & Carrie Bradley (Kurt's grandparents - the parents of his mother Emma) are buried in Moreland Memorial Park in Baltimore. Now I have to plan a visit in the upcoming weeks!

February 5, 2009 - 'Under the Stars and Bars'

I've just realized that Francis Irwin Stone's brother, Osborn M. Stone, also appears in the book by Walter A. Clarke which documents his time served fighting the Yankees in the Civil War. It notes that he was on the Roster of the "Oglethorpes"; that he was 2nd Sergeant and promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1862.

February 4, 2009 - Frank Stone's service in the Civil War

In 1862, Frank Stone's regiment was stationed in Savannah. It was a miserable stay, as the troops' quarters were plagued with fleas and mosquitoes. Alligators were known to crawl up on the banks and steal the soldiers’ rations. Soldiers were forced to stand motionless during afternoon dress parades as the sandflies attacked them mercilessly. Medical supplies were scarce, and most meals consisted of fat bacon and cornbread.

February 3, 2009 - Fox Hunting

As a teenager, Richard LeRoy Daughtry (Cliff Daughtry's father) enjoyed fox hunting with his uncle, Eldridge Barlow. Richard Leroy Daughtry

Eldridge, who was an avid fox hunter, would awaken LeRoy after all the children had gone to sleep, gather the dogs, and head out in pursuit of foxes. As they passed each neighbor's house, the dogs living there would join in the chase as well, so by the end of the hunt (which usually wasn't until the following morning), a huge pack of dogs would be with them.

Interestingly, the goal of fox hunting was not to kill the fox, but merely to find him. It was considered bad form (and poor skills) to shoot a fox or to allow the dogs to otherwise dispose of the fox during these hunts.

January 30, 2009 - Frank Stone and the Civil War

A new year finds me quite delinquent in tending to this blog, but I've just finished reading through 'Under the Stars and Bars' by Walter A. Clarke. The book is a first-hand account of Walter's experience during the Civil War, and in his stories he mentions several of his fellow soldiers, one of which is Francis Irwin Stone, the grandfather of Grannie Frannie. This is not news; there are a few second cousins out there who have had copies of this book for years. I only just obtained a copy late last year, and discovered something interesting as I read: there is a John C. Kirkpatrick and Will A. Dabney also mentioned in the same regiment as Frank and Walter.

As any reader of this blog knows, Kirkpatrick and Dabney are both family names, and I do have records of a John and Will, both of which would have been alive during the Civil War and would be of fighting age. Are they our relatives? I don't know, but my gut tells me there is some relation.

Frank married Emma Antoinette Kirkpatrick in December 1867, two years after the war ended. Emma was the daughter of Elizabeth Antoinette Dabney. Coincidence? I tend to think not! But I will write some of my newfound cousins to day and ask if they've ever heard such a theory.

John Kirkpatrick may have been Emma's brother. Will may have been an uncle.

I developed an interest in researching my family's history after the death of my husband's grandfather made me realize how much information is lost as each generation passes. I am actively searching for living relatives and trying to gather as much factual and anecdotal data as possible on my ancestors.

I (Caite) am a direct descendant of Richard Barlow, Wiley Delansing Daughtry, Richard LeRoy Daughtry, James Hutchison Kirkpatrick, Cliff Daughtry, Francis Wallace Stone, Francis Irwin Stone, Emma Antoinette Kirkpatrick, Herbert Paul Straszkiewicz, Kurt Franz Josef Straszkiewicz, Joseph Straszkiewicz, Wilhelmina (Minnie) Straszkiewicz, Richard Madison Rhyne, Herbert Hoover, Benjamin R. Hoover, Albertus Rhyne, Mary Clifford Jossey, Laura Ann Barlow, Zula Mae Rhyne, Daniel Stone, Cynthia Shumate, Mason Shumate, Nancy Gatewood, James Hutchison Kirkpatrick, Winifred Oxford, Nathaniel Pope, Hugh Parks, Jesse Barlow, Thomas Barlow, Huldah Pope, Emma Catherine Bradley, James H. Bradley, Franklin W. Bradley, Charles Henry Bradley, Carrie Virginia Miller, Emeline Mills, Elizabeth Keyser...and a few more, but the people I have spent the most time researching are listed above.
